Sketching for the Terrified with Fiona Odle

Learn Something New! A complete 6 week sketching course, covering all subject matter for someone who wants to learn enough new skills to go out sketching with confidence! The course will run from 10am-3pm every Thursday, commencing on the 23rd September 2021.

WEEK 1 - 23rd September 2021

The Art of Mark Making 

AM: Learn how to use different pencils to create texture and contrast using various drawing mediums: pencils,  charcoal, and ink. 

PM: Put your new-found skills into practice through a series of small projects. 

All materials supplied including a sketchbook and pencils for you to keep. 

WEEK 2  - 30th September 2021

Composition, Proportion and Perspective 

AM: Learn to see geometric shapes in the subjects you draw and discover simple techniques to measure angles  and distance with demonstration first. 

PM: Use your new observational drawing techniques to draw still life objects. 

WEEK 3 - 7th October 2021

Buildings and Interiors 

AM: Learn the difference between one, two, and three-point perspective with demonstration first. Drawing a room  interior using one point perspective. Learn about vanishing points and planes. 

PM: Sketch an area of farm buildings (weather permitting) or close ups of stonework, etc, otherwise, using mark making from week 1 and measuring techniques from week 2. 

WEEK 4 - 14th October 2021

Landscape 

AM: Work on texture and contrast techniques from week 1 to create grass, bark, trees, and bushes. PM: Take a walk into the woods and find yourself a small area to draw using all your new-found skills. 

WEEK 5 - 21st October 2021

Botanical 

AM: Look at famous artists and see how they tackle botanical drawing. Draw seed pods from still life using different  media from week 1. 

PM: Sketch a vase of flowers from still life concentrating on contrast and thickness of line. 

WEEK 6 - 28th October 2021

Figures 

AM: Look at figures from art history and learn about human proportions. Draw out a figure using simple measuring  techniques. 

PM: Sketch a costumed life model using all the skills learned over the past weeks. 

About your tutor:

Fiona Odle was born in St Andrews, Scotland, but grew up beside the River Nidd in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, where she is now based. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Art & Design at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2000, quickly followed by an Adult Teaching Certificate. Over the years, Fiona has developed a diverse set of skills and techniques. Working predominantly in painting and drawing, she has moved from miniature to large-scale, landscape to portraiture; figurative to abstract.
