Hopewell Studios offers an ongoing programme of creative courses, covering many medias in the historic market town of Knaresborough.
The courses are planned to enrich the participants both with tangible skills and experience, as well as a social interaction with like minded people. It is important to us that all the courses are mindfully delivered; we only offer first class experience.

Art Focus - Renoir and Painting Class
Delve into Renoir's use of bold combinations of pure complementary colors and how he creates light and shadows, setting the stage for an interactive acrylic painting session.

Frida in a Frame
We will create a beautiful Frida Kahlo inspired painted and collaged artwork using Mulberry flowers, foil art, gems, and decorative papers. You can personalise the image to be subtle or not, eyes open or closed and so forth.
You will then finish off your image with a box frame so your Frida is ready to be displayed as soon as you get home!
Christmas Card Lino Cut Printing

Silver Clay Pendant Making
In this class, you will learn how to make your own beautiful fine silver jewellery from silver clay. Tara will show you how to make one to two pendants and/or a pair of earrings, depending on how big you make them. Your pieces will be ready to take home at the end of the day.
Art Focus - Klimt and The Kiss Painting Class
Join Sarah Charneca M.A. for an engaging talk about the artist Gustav Klimt setting the stage for an interactive painting session after the short presentation.
We will learn about Klimts iconic use of gold and textures before collaging an A3 image of The Kiss using various textured gold and patterned papers and paint.
Discover the art of collage and layering plain and patterned papers to create your own rendition of Klimt’s masterpiece, while elevating your own creativity in this hands-on workshop and unleash your inner artist!
Contemporary Textiles - Five Week Course
Over the course of 5 weeks we will look at a selection of contemporary artists, their techniques and then create in their style. We will explore Paper and Thread, Wire and Fabric, Layers, Paint and Cyanotype.
The course is suitable for beginners or intermediates who want to create with others in a relaxed supportive environment. If you have a sewing machine to bring with you, this is ideal but hand sewing will also be suitable.
Personal Development and Emotional Wellbeing - Three Week Course
So often our life seems to be governed by the needs of others. Whether that is work, family or community. What might happen is that we tend to push our own needs at the bottom of the "To Do" list.
By making "inward-investment" a priority, we can become more resilient and gain a greater sense of self-worth. This short weekly programme will give you a step-by-step plan and a toolkit to help you develop positive self-care habits, this is a great opportunity to spring clean your mind.
Art Focus - Van Gogh and Sunflowers Painting Class
Join us for a short and informative talk about Van Gogh’s techniques and use of colours before using these newly learnt skills to paint your own rendition of a “Sunflowers” style art piece.
We will have a vase of sunflowers for you as a reference. Our experienced instructor will provide step-by-step instructions and tips throughout the session.
Stone Carving a Green Man - Two Day Course (Bookings Now Closed)
We will delve into techniques used in this Heritage craft over the two days to unleash your artistic potential as you carve a Green Man into the canvas of stone.
You will personalise the design of your Green man, then be guided by our experienced stone mason on how to use the tools provided to carve different aspects and create texture. You will create depth and relief to bring your Green Man to life. You will master fundamental masonry skills and refine your technique in a supportive and inspiring atmosphere.
Whether you're a complete novice or a seasoned artist, this hands-on workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricate world of stone carving. Transform raw stone into your masterpiece, and leave with your very own creation, new skills and inspiration to fuel your creative journey.

Over the five weeks, we will explore various textile techniques to create decorative backgrounds that are ready for further embellishment, as well as standalone pieces. In addition, we will use stitching as a form of mark-making to enhance the work.
The course is suitable for beginners or intermediates who wish to create alongside others in a relaxed, supportive environment. If you have a sewing machine to bring with you, this is ideal, though hand sewing will also be suitable.
Beginner Techniques in Watercolour Painting - Five Week Course
This 5-week course covers techniques to develop your watercolour skills and knowledge and is aimed at beginners. You will explore subjects such as stretching paper, laying different types of washes, wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, lifting, dry brush, mixing colours, monochrome images, and hard and soft edges.
Each week, you will learn different techniques and build on previous work, discovering how to bring these skills together while working with a variety of subjects, including sky and clouds, still life, and landscapes.
All materials and equipment are provided, but feel free to bring your own brushes and mixing palette if you wish.

Make your own stunning spooky stained glass bat using smooth and textured coloured glass In this afternoon session!
In this workshop you will be taught how to cut glass safely, grind and shape the glass on a machine, copper foil and then solder to a high standard.
Janet will have the heads and ears already prepared as they can be very fiddly for beginners in a 3 hour workshop.
